![]() I found purposiveness opaque, but a term refering, in both tacit and explicit ways, to a potential purpose of a given object, as held in abeyance before any end can be assigned to it or any possibility of usefulness. ![]() It is through an application of Lewitt’s work to the Kantian distinction between form of purposiveness and purposiveness of form in “Analytic of the Beautiful” that I hope to clarify Kant’s assertions regarding individual judgments of beauty, which looks at beauty’s universality as free of concepts, and appeal to judgments of beauty that attain to subjective universality through their communication. From one of the most erudite founders of conceptual art, Sol Lewitt’s Wall Drawings, exhibited at Dia: Beacon, stand as ephemeral and enlivened examples of the formal potentiality for geometric and minimal work to evoke beauty.
